Local Government Week highlights role of Thames Valley trustees

Posted On Monday October 14, 2024

Did you know school board trustees are the oldest form of elected representative in Ontario? It’s true!

Getting to know the importance of school board trustees and other local representatives is exactly why we have Local Government Week (October 13-19).

During that week, the Thames Valley District School Board will team up with the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) to educate students and give them important information about local government, and the role trustees play.

“I love Local Government Week. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with students, staff and the community about the importance of local government,” said Board Chairperson Beth Mai. “And it’s a chance to talk about what school board trustees do, and how they help student success and achievement.”

First established in 1807, school board trustees have represented generations of community minded citizens on behalf of local, publicly funded schools, building the foundation of our education system today.

The board of trustees sets TVDSB’s vision, develops policies, allocates resources and sets the goals that drive programs and operations in the board. Collectively, Trustees created Thames Valley’s new Multi-Year Strategic Plan for student achievement and well-being, a roadmap that will steer the school board’s collective journey toward a brighter, more successful future.
